Expert Interview | Chris Bibey

1/ Tell me more about your journey and how you got started with content

I graduated college with a journalism degree — assuming I would be a sportswriter. However, this was when many newspapers were transitioning more to online content.

So, I pivoted and decided to become a freelance writer. That was roughly 15 years ago.

In my early days, I focused primarily on website copy. I enjoyed it and stuck with this niche for a handful of years.

I eventually turned my attention to long-form blog content, where I focus a good portion of my resources today.

Along the way, I’ve dabbled in many other areas of content creation and strategy. For example, I have two books in print and enjoy writing sales letters for local retail companies.

A lot has changed since I started as a freelance writer but there’s never a dull moment.

2/ What is the best way for content writers to find jobs?

It depends on various factors such as experience, rates, job type, and area of specialty.

At a high level, here’s my advice:

  • Search for opportunities online. Use Twitter, LinkedIn, and job boards to source and apply for gigs. My newsletter, Freelance Framework, collects and shares new gigs 5x/week. Remember this: you can’t secure a job that you don’t apply for.
  • Cold email (and DMs). It’s not easy, but it remains one of the best ways to generate interest in your services. Set a schedule, such as 10 cold emails per day, and stick with it. It’s a number game, so don’t quit before you give yourself a real opportunity to succeed.
  • Networking. Talk to your network about your services and goals. Tell them that you’re looking for work. Encourage them to share your name with people in their network. In other words, get your “brand” out there

Final tip: don’t rely on one method of finding new opportunities. Cast a wide net, see what generates results, and continually tweak your approach.

The Best in Content This Week

I read 100s of articles every week and find the best (so you don't have to).

What You Should Know About SearchGPT (Go Fish). OpenAI's new search engine, SearchGPT, offers an ad-free experience, a user-friendly interface with a three-column layout, and detailed, well-cited answers similar to extended Featured Snippets. It includes local search results and supports follow-up questions, making it a dynamic tool. SearchGPT is not a chatbot but uses LLM technology to enhance search results. Despite being in alpha testing, it shows promise as a competitor to Google, particularly with its emphasis on transparency and user experience.

7 Key Questions and Tools to Assess Your Site Organic Search Rankings Drops (Aleyda Solis). Aleyda Solis discusses how to diagnose drops in organic search rankings by using key questions and a mix of SEO tools. She advises checking correlations with Google updates, identifying affected queries and pages, and determining if drops are due to changes in positions or CTR. Solis also recommends analyzing SERP features, comparing your pages with those that improved, and assessing competitors. This comprehensive analysis helps create a prioritized optimization plan. For more details, visit the full article on her blog.

How to Find Relevant and Fresh Content to Curate: Top 10 Sources (Buffer). Content curation involves selecting and organizing relevant information for your audience. Instead of relying solely on common tools, use unique sources like industry-specific newsletters, niche news outlets, social media trend reports, and user-generated content. Monitor your For You Page (FYP) on social platforms for personalized trends, and search hashtags and keywords for relevant topics. Engage in industry communities, follow thought leaders' blogs and podcasts, and balance curated content with original creations to maintain credibility and engagement.

Hello Reader! My daughter is taking a class called “Exploring History Through Graphic Novels,” and her most recent lesson got me thinking… You know. We've already learned everything we need to know about seeking a fortune online from...the Donner Party. Hear me out. Remember when the Donner Party took the advice in Lansford Hasting's The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California to heart? And then they altered their route to try and get to California faster via the Hastings Cutoff? But, it...

Hello Reader! If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say, “content is weird right now…” It's true. Content IS weird, and it's not going to unWEIRD itself. Here are my thoughts on why it’s so bonkers and the way forward. The Why: 1/ 🤖 AI (duh) If your content is thin, surface-level, and built on copying other work, AI is replacing your content teams. AI is good at anything predictive. It can scrape what exists. It can define. It can summarize. It reads really fast. AI has already...
